TYPE 1S ARE PRINCIPLED, ETHICAL, AND DRIVEN BY A DESIRE FOR INTEGRITY AND IMPROVEMENT. THEY HAVE A STRONG INNER CRITIC THAT PUSHES THEM TO STRIVE FOR PERFECTION, OFTEN LEADING TO FRUSTRATION WHEN THINGS DON'T MEET THEIR HIGH STANDARDS. THEIR JOURNEY INVOLVES LEARNING TO EMBRACE COMPASSION FOR THEMSELVES AND OTHERS WHILE ACCEPTING THE IMPERFECTIONS OF LIFE.
MOTIVATION OF AN E1:
To be perfect.
ONE’s motivations are to be good or worthy so they are desperately trying to be right or correct. They seek perfection in thought, word or deed. They are motivated to improve themselves and others, and to be the best they can be with integrity in everything they do. And they are always motivated to silence their inner critic (by not giving them anything wrong to criticize.)
PASSION OF AN E1:
ANGER/RESENTMENT
Anger is a result of the best of ONEs but they become more and more aware of things that need to be done correctly, and they pay attention only to details and not the overall quality of things, and they too can cross the line. Their anger gets turned inward on themselves first. Often, ONEs do not know they are angry, as they grew up believing anger is not a “good” or “right” emotion to feel, so they work diligently to hide their anger at all times, stuffing it down until they can find a private place or “correct” outlet to let it out.
TRIAD:
Gut/BODY
FUELED BY: ANGER | AND RESPOND PHYSICALLY. THEY MOVE TOWARD PLEASURE AND AWAY FROM PAIN. THEY THINK IN THE REALM OF IMPULSE.
WHEN TRIGGERED: ONES TURN ANGER IN ON THEMSELVES FIRST AND EXPRESS IT BY RESENTMENT. WHEN THEY FINALLY LET OUT THE ANGER, THEY ARE NEVER REALLY ANGRY ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE ACTING TO BE ANGRY ABOUT.
THEY VALUE: ASSERTIVENESS, EFFECTIVENESS, IMPLEMENTATION AND PRAGMATISM.
THEY ARE DRIVEN BY: DETERMINATION, LOOKING FOR AUTONOMY OVER THEIR SPACE/PLACE.
STANCE:
DEPENDENT
THE DEPENDENT STANCE FEELS THE NEED TO RESPOND TO THE WORLD AROUND THEM. E1s IN PARTICULAR, FEELS THE NEED TO DO SOMETHING IN THEIR RESPONSE.
TALK STYLE: TEACHING THAT TURNS INTO PREACHING.
ORIENTATION TO TIME: THE PRESENT.
IN RELATION TO OTHERS: CO-DEPENDENT; FOCUSES/FIXATES ON THE BEHAVIOR OF OTHERS.
*AS A ONE, DOING IS SUPPORTED BY FEELING, THEIR REFERENCE POINT IS OUTSIDE OF THEM, AND THEY ARE VERBAL PROCESSORS.
STRESS & SECURITY
Also known as disintegration (stress) and integration (security), the Enneagram shows us the types we go to when life’s not going our way, and we can’t get our needs met; as well as where we go to when things are falling into place just the way we need them to.
STRESS: ONEs NEED FOUR ENERGY IN STRESS TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THEIR DEEPER FEELINGS.
SECURITY: THE FREEDOM ONEs EXPERIENCE IN SEVEN DURING SECURITY IS HEALING.
AS CHILDREN…
As children, ones were told to not be “too much” of anything: not “too” loud, or “too” dramatic, or “Too” attentive, etc. Ones were often required to grow up too fast, expected to act like adults instead of children at an age when someone else should have taken care of them.
MESSAGeS:
WOUNDING MESSAGE: “IT’S NOT OK TO MAKE MISTAKES.”
LOST MESSAGE: “YOU ARE GOOD.”
